UPDATE 4:32 p.m.

Blacksburg, Va (AP) - Cody Journell kicked a 29-yard field goal with 4 seconds to play, and Virginia Tech beat Virginia 17-14 Saturday to qualify for a bowl game and win its ninth straight from its in-state rival.

Antone Exum set up the winning drive when he intercepted Michael Rocco at the Cavaliers' 36 with 3:21 remaining. Exum brought it back to the 24, and Virginia (4-8, 2-6) inexplicably held on to two timeouts as the Hokies ran the clock down. The Cavaliers used both timeouts to try to freeze Journell, but his kick sailed through.

Logan Thomas ran for one touchdown and threw for another for the Hokies (6-6, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have also won 13 of the last 14 in taking command of a once-close rivalry.

Virginia led 14-7 after its first defensive touchdown this season on a 16-yard fumble return by Brent Urban early in the third quarter.

Blacksburg, VA – After a season of ups and downs, Virginia Tech and UVa fans are braving the wind, flurries, and bitter cold in hopes of heating up their team's record by claiming the coveted Commonwealth Cup.

If Virginia Tech wants a chance at a bowl this season, they must win today's match-up. Tech has an overall season of 5-6 before stomping into a crowd of over 65,000 at Lane Stadium.

Saturday's game is also the last for the Cavaliers, with a record of 4-7 going into the inter-state rivalry.

The Hokies have earned eight straight Commonwealth Cups, winning 12 of out of the past 13 clashes against the Cavs.

Both Virginia Teams have Lynchburg ties.

Adding more local tension to the rivalry, UVa's quarterback Michael Rocco is from Lynchburg and Virginia Tech's quarter back Logan Thomas also hails from the hill city.
