Fire Danger High Today

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - The National Weather Service says the threat for small brush fires and wildfires are high today.

The main area of concern is along and north of Highway 460. This area includes Roanoke, Bedford, and Lynchburg and extends north into Lexington.

It's the combination of high winds, gusting to 30 mph Saturday, and very dry air that is helping small fires break out across the area easier than during wetter conditions.

Rainfall departures aren't helping, either.

Since January 1, Lynchburg is 10.41" below normal.

Danville is the driest, with a precipitation departure of 14.15".

Even Roanoke has a yearly departure of 7.26".

Most of the ABC 13 viewing area is in a moderate drought already, and with no rain in sight the situation could get worse before it gets better.

If you see a brush fire burning, call 911 immediately.
