Update: Roanoke County Brush Fire Now at 13 Acres

UPDATE 3 p.m.

Roanoke County, VA – Firefighters from Roanoke County along with the Virginia Department of Forestry continue to battle a brush fire on top of Bent Mountain.

Crews have the fire contained to about 13 acres.

Monday afternoon firefighters worked to put out the burning brush within a containment line, but they are also cutting down and removing any dead trees or brush that could cause the fire to spread again. Foam is also being used over and near the blaze in hopes of putting it out.

Roanoke County hoped to have their efforts in controlling the fire complete by the end of Monday. The department of forestry will still be monitoring the situation into the week, though.

Much of the Central Virginia remains very dry and despite some light rain Tuesday, the rest of the week looks dry as well.

So far investigators have found no cause of the fire.

Roanoke County, VA - A brush fire on Bent Mountain in Roanoke County grew to between 15 and 20 acres overnight Sunday. Crews from Bent Mountain, Cave Spring, Hollins and Masons Cove worked throughout the night to contain the blaze. At last check, the fire was contained to 14 acres.

The people living in one home very close to the fire had were even forced to evacuate Sunday Night, but have since been allowed to return home.

Still, about 20 firefighters are working to keep the fire contained by digging containment lines and clearing away brush and leaves from eight nearby homes in the area.

The Virginia Department of Forestry is helping by digging around the fire today.

The National Weather Service says the brush fire danger is still extremely high today. With very low humidity and already dry ground, any burning of leaves or trash or tossing lit cigarettes is strongly discouraged.

Although winds are expected to be lighter today, gusts of up to 20 mph are still possible on mountain ridges.
