Virginia College Application Week

Posted:

Danville, VA -- It's that time of year when many high school seniors are under pressure to send those dreaded college applications. But an effort by Governor McDonnell is making that process a bit smoother.

Monday kicks off Virginia College Application Week, a new program that encourages students to apply to higher education. Two of the pilot schools selected for the program are in Danville, Galileo and George Washington High Schools. Seniors get to meet with representatives from Virginia colleges and application fees have been waived at some schools. Some seniors were admitted Monday.

"The representative looked at the transcript and my scores and immediately accepted me. It felt good to get it out of the way, one off my plate. That was a good stress relief," said Erica Dixon, Galileo Senior who was accepted to Longwood University.

More than half of the senior class at Galileo has already applied to college. Tuesday, Heritage High School in Lynchburg is taking part.
