Tunstall HS Community Excited as Football Team Heads to State Semifinals

Pittsylvania Co., VA - Tunstall High School's football team took the Regional title last week, and now they're gearing up for a statewide semi-final game against Brookville.

This is the first time in the school's history that the football team has made it this close to a state championship.

Everyone is hoping to get a win on Saturday as they continue their pursuit of the championship.

"It gives the school a lot of attention. This last Friday night was probably the largest crowd that's been here at this stadium in 10 or 11 years now," said Lane Woods, offensive coordinator.

Assistant Coach Lane Woods attributes the team's success to a good combination of players and their commitment to the program.

"They've worked so hard during the season. I'm really proud of them because when you watch them work and see the fruits of their labor, it's tremendous," said Woods.

"We're just really excited to get out there for a chance to play for a state championship, and we're just hoping we can get a win," said Evan Huffman, a Tunstall football player

Many of the players are enjoying this historic moment with celebratory mohawks.

"We said if we won the regional championship game we'd all get them. Now we've got them," said Chase Scarce.

Cindy Pyrtle is a local hairstylist whose son plays on the team. She's the woman behind the clippers.

"The team came together to do this. I think it shows it's a team effort. It takes a team to win the game and if they don't, they're still number one in our hearts," she said.

Now the players and coaches are hoping to pull off an upset against undefeated Brookville.

But no matter the outcome, they are proud to have made it this far.

Pyrtle did not cut the mohawks for free, but she did it for a good cause. To get the cut, each player was asked to donate $5 to a fund for Tunstall Middle School student Jake Lee who is awaiting a heart transplant after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition.
