Update 11:15 a.m.:

Lynchburg, VA – A 14-year-old boy is in custody after police say he brought a small bomb to Rivermont School in Lynchburg Thursday morning, prompting an evacuation.

Lynchburg Police Captain Ryan Zuidema says officials evacuated Rivermont School and the surrounding area on Forest Hills Circle after receiving a call at 7:47 a.m. that a bomb had been brought on to school property by a student. The school is off Old Forest Road.

They later found that a 14-year-old boy did bring a chemical bomb to school.

School administration became aware that the student had the bomb, and one of the administrators took it outside and called police.

Police responded and evacuated about 56 students and 21 staff members, as well as residences and businesses nearby.

Officials say the student had a small bomb that would have hurt people in the immediate vicinity if they were standing near it. It would not have blown up the building. State police officials took the bomb to a remote site and set it off.

The student is in custody, and officials say there is no evidence that anyone else was involved.

The students, ranging from kindergarten to 21-year-olds, were taken on a bus to another location where parents picked them up

Several departments, including Lynchburg police, the state police bomb squad, and the fire department, responded to the incident.

The evacuation order was later lifted from the area.
