Floral Haven is offering advice and comfort to families grieving the loss of a loved one this holiday season.
The funeral home has invited families it has served this year to attend a service Sunday night to learn tips about coping with loss around the holidays.
Director of Community Relations Steve Moeller met with Channel 8 before the event to share some of those tips:
- Do not be afraid to talk about the deceased relative. In fact, Moeller suggested incorporating him/her into your holiday plans. For example, you might consider placing their photo on the dinner table.
- Know what you can handle. Moeller said if shopping is stressing you out, consider buying gift cards this year. If you usually send personalized holiday cards, and do not feel up to doing that, consider printing one newsletter to mail.
- Continue to celebrate the holiday. Moeller said to still decorate for the holidays, even if on a smaller scale. Moeller suggested picking a few holiday parties to attend. You do not have to go to as many as you usually might.
- Consider volunteering. Moeller said he volunteered around the holidays after losing a family member to find a way to be productive with his grief.
Channel 8 spoke with a woman who is about to spend her eighth Christmas without her mother. She said she still feels a "void" knowing her mother is no longer alive, but said spending time with family and friends has helped.
