Lynchburg Celebrates Christmas Parade Downtown

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA – Lynchburg Held its annual Christmas Parade downtown on Sunday. The theme was "Christmas, A Time to Remember."

There were about 100 entries in this year's Christmas Parade, a record-breaking year for the event.

Many were downtown early preparing their floats, all hoping to get crowned the winner.

But the participants weren't the only ones getting ready. Thousands of people poured downtown for the celebration excited to see what the parade had to offer.

"We got several floats and things like that, so we're just looking for some festive folks and get a kick off to the Christmas," said Brandon Gregory, a parade judge.

It was Heather Childress' job to make that all happen. She said most people were excited about the Grand Marshal: Nathan Norman. The 5-year-old boy fighting cancer was very excited to lead the parade, and he knew exactly what to do.

"I'm just going to wave and smile," said Nathan before the parade started.

And there was another surprise.

"We have helium balloons this year in the parade that will be fun to watch I think. We're excited," said Childress.

When it came to showtime, the crowd was excited too. The parade was filled with music, lights and even some acrobats.

So what was the overall response?

"I've seen like a big star, I've seen a Christmas ornament. I've seen people on the radio and little kids marching and the army. It was actually pretty good, I liked it," said Patrick Jenkins, who was there with his family.

"I've never been here before, and I wish I would've come before," said a man with Heritage Baptist Church. "Great performance, great floats. It's outstanding, pretty cool."

Organizers can't know exactly how many people were out there Sunday, but they say it was definitely in the thousands.
