Appomattox Approves Park Lights

Appomattox, VA - The Appomattox County Community Park off Police Tower Road will soon get lights for two of its baseball fields.

The announcement comes after the Appomattox Board of Supervisors agreed Monday night to  loan enough money to get the lights up.

For many ball players and parents, being able to light the field is a dream come true.

"I'm just ecstatic about it," said Janice White. Her son played at the park.

White remembers having to reschedule games because it got too dark.

"We've had to go to other counties to play, or play on Saturday and Sunday," said White.

"I've spent years sitting there dreaming," said Ray Perkins, president of Appomattox Youth Sports.

Perkind was around when the park broke ground 12 years ago.

"I cut the first tree and ran bulldozers. A lot of blood sweat and tears have been put into that park," said Perkins.

They've raised $60,000 for the lights so far, but that's not nearly enough. To light just two of their six fields, it will cost a little more than $100,000. Folks are thankful that the county stepped in to help.

"We are just blessed to have a community that supports us," said White.

"It's all about the kids, I'd fight for the kids and I'd hate to give up on them and I'd never give up on them," said Perkins.

This agreement isn't a typical loan. The board says they will pay the difference for the lights for now, with donations helping to pay off the loan as they come in.
