Martinsville-Henry County SPCA Needs Donations

Posted:

Martinsville, VA - The Martinsville-Henry County SPCA desperately needs your help. Leaders say they are low on donations, and it's the worst they have ever seen at this time of the year.

That means that fewer animals will make it to the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, which is a no kill shelter. Right now, they have about 90 animals at the facility, but they can only hold as many as they can afford.

"It's Christmas time, everyone deserves a home for the holidays," said Leslie Hervey, executive director of Martinsville-Henry County SPCA.

Year round, the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA focuses on finding a home for these animals. But this year, they've seen an all time low for donations, down around $50,000, which could save 200 animals over the year.

"We are woefully behind this year, and I don't know why," said Hervey.

Lower funds means fewer animals at the no-kill shelter. Those that don't end up here, could be euthanized.

"We can only take in as many animals as we can afford to treat, that's just logical. You have to stay within your budget," said Hervey.

Hervey says most of their donations happen between September and December, and if they don't get the money now, they likely won't be able to raise it during the year.

"Going to our pound, it's heartbreaking because every single one of those animals looks at you and you know they are looking at you saying help me. And we are trying as hard as we can to help those guys," said Chase Inman, who works at SPCA.

Their long-term goal is to have the entire community of Martinsville and Henry County be no-kill by 2015. But with each animal costing them $250, they need the funds to do it.

"These guys need us and we need to fulfill that obligation to them," said Inman.

Still, Hervey and her team feels confident.

"I believe that the community will step forward and push us towards our goal," said Hervey.
