Salvation Army Angel Tree Program Provides for 3,000 Kids

Posted:

Roanoke Co., VA - A lot of you may have contributed to the dozens of Salvation Army Angel Trees in our area. There are dozens scattered in the Roanoke Valley alone.

This is the week that "Santa's Workshop" has been putting the pedal to the metal getting those requests out to hundreds of needy families.

Sometimes Santa's elves take on all shapes and sizes: cub scouts, jolly young ladies or Jenny Stiff.

"The joy you get out of knowing that you are helping a child have a good Christmas morning... that's all the incentive you need," said Stiff.

She isn't alone; From October through the end of this week, dozens of volunteers have been burning the midnight oil making Christmas a little brighter for 1,300 - which equals more than 3,000 individual kids across the Roanoke Valley.

"It's been kind of tough this year."

Families like Rahim Brook's family who says for the first time his kids are going to get a big Christmas.

"Some people don't have Christmas. Seem people don't have nothing you know, said Brooks."

Hundreds of bikes, nearly a thousand dolls - all with handmade clothing from the volunteers.

Stockings and of course plenty of toys.

A lot of things to give to a lot of people who are in need. It includes an abundance of love and satisfaction that can't even start to fit in the basket.

It puts joy in your heart and that's what Christmas is all about: Giving, sharing and making people happy. Whether you know them or not," said Stiff.

While the Salvation Army Angel Tree program came up a little short this year, a few last minute donations insured that all the orders were filled.

The Salvation Army says they are just grateful to be able to be involved in that connection between a stranger and a child in need.
