The Origin of the Second Amendment to the Constitution

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - American gun rights are rooted in the Second Amendment, but guns have changed a great deal since the American Revolution.

History Professor at Lynchburg College Dr. Clifton Potter says when our Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment, the weapons were primitive.

People owned bows and arrows and rifles that shot about 50 yards away. They used them for food, protection, and defending the young nation at the times there was not a standing army.

"Every able-bodied male was expected when the call came, to take the gun from behind the door and form up and defend the Republic."

Many American gun laws are rooted in English Common Law. English law required every free-born man to practice shooting and prepare to defend the nation.
