Update: Funeral Set for Teen Killed in Halifax Co. Crash


Update Dec. 28:

Halifax Co., VA - A Sutherlin teen killed in a Christmas Eve crash will be laid to rest Friday.

The funeral for Halifax County High School senior Ryan Puryear will be held at Grace Baptist Church in Virgilina at 2 p.m.

State Police say the 18-year-old died when his truck ran off the side of Wolf Trap Road and hit a tree on Christmas Eve.

Investigators say speed was a factor in the crash.


Halifax Co, VA - State Police say a Halifax County teen was killed in a crash on Christmas Eve.

Crews responded to the scene on Wolf Trap Road in Scottsburg late Monday night.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle, Alfred Burkholder, III, 18, ran off the road and over-corrected before hitting a tree.

Burkholder and a 17-year-old passenger were transported to a local hospital.

A third passenger, Ryan Puryear, 18, died in the crash.

Police say none of the teens were wearing a seat belt.
