Liberty University Expects a Big Crowd at Winterfest Concerts

Lynchburg, VA - Crews and bands were busy Sunday setting up and doing sound checks for Liberty University's Winterfest.

Winterfest is Sunday and Monday, and organizers say it's a great way to welcome the year 2013.

"The most unique thing about Winterfest is the fact that you're bringing in the New Year from a Christian perspective. It is one of the biggest if not the largest Christian event on New Year's as an alternative," says Mathew Hockensmith, Winterfest coordinator.

The main attractions are the concerts featuring top Christian bands from around the nation.

Chris Holt and Jordan Mixon made the trip to the Hill City all of the way up from South Carolina.

"We've been making a big deal of this for a couple of months now. We actually all tried to get our tickets all together," said Holt. "We actually started planning it back in September I think," said Mixon.

Winterfest also has activities like ice skating, campus tours and skiing at Snowflex. Organizers say it all helps the university recruit future students.

Some high school students were up on Liberty Mountain snowboarding. They made the trip to see their favorite bands perform.

"We come to ski and snowboard and see concerts. Building 429 and Casting Crowns," one high schooler said .

About 7,500 people are expected to come out each night for Interest, transforming the Vines Center from a huge empty room to a fan-filled concert arena.

"Bringing in the New Year with 7,000 other people, 5,200 balloons dropping, confetti raining down on you. "It's just a great opportunity to experience the New Year and party with a lot of other people," Hockensmith said.

But most people are here for the live music.

"Casting Crowds!" said Mixon. "TobyMac! Well, we can both agree though, that both are really good," said Holt laughing.

If you missed Winterfest Sunday, several activities will be going on Monday, including the big New Year's Eve concert.

You can see a complete schedule and get tickets on Winterfest's website.
