Making New Year's Resolutions Stick

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Most of us would have to agree that at some point in our life we have made a New Year's resolution. But according to "Statistic Brain," only 8% of people are successful at keeping them. We're here to show you how you can you make your 2013 resolution stick.

According to statistics, the number one New Year's resolution is to lose weight. At the Bikram Yoga Studio in Lynchburg they say it is all about making mini resolutions when it comes to losing weight and this is a concept that can be applied to anything in your life.

"I didn't watch my eating at all. I ate like a teenage boy over the holidays," said Katie Thomas.

Thomas admits she was not making the best decisions.

"Pizza, pasta, cookies, chocolate, lots of dinner out," said Thomas.

So she made it her resolution to take better care of herself.

"I knew that I wanted to lose about 8-10 pounds in 2013 so I started [taking yoga] in December," said Thomas.

Bikram Yoga of Lynchburg co-owner and instructor Sarah Curl says it is all about making sensible choices.

"I think setting simple little mini resolutions for yourself. Little things that you would like to change so that it becomes a habit, it becomes a part of your lifestyle," said Curl.

For instance if your goal is to exercise more she says plan to exercise every day, even if it is just a walk outside.

"I think sometimes people go too big with their resolutions. I think if you try to do something huge, that's when you end up failing," said Curl.

This concept can be applied to anything.

"Sleep. Just decide to go to bed a half an hour earlier," said Curl.

Curl says if your resolution is to get healthier, the first step is making a commitment to take care of yourself. When it comes to diet and changing the way you eat, she recommends changing the foods you put in, rather than attempting to take things out of your diet, like cutting all sugar.
