African Choir Visits Danville Church

Posted:

Danville, VA – It wasn't business as usual for a church in Danville Sunday morning.

Trinity United Methodist Church got a taste of Africa during their worship service.

An organization based in Uganda called Watoto Children's choir gave the congregation a huge performance.

The group travels all over the world. They are on their east coast tour right now. When they wrap up in May, their next stop is Brazil.

Included in the children's choir are singing and dancing, but the main goal is to bring awareness of orphaned children in Uganda.

The Watoto Children's Choir is an outreach of Watoto Ministries. The ministry started in 1994 and set up special villages in Uganda to take care of orphans and widows.

"The children that are here today are representing close to three thousand children in Watoto that have lost parents to war or disease so they're traveling as advocates for the millions of children that can't speak for themselves," said Team Leader Gideon Kizito.

The choir is comprised of 22 children, ranging in age from seven to 13 years old.

They're on a busy tour, performing seven months out of the year.

"They visit schools as well, spend time with the students. They sing in churches, in hospitals...everywhere," Kizito said.

Maria Namukwaya says her most favorite place they have visited so far is New York.

"It broadens their perspective of what they thought the world was. But by the end of it they're blossoming," Kizito said.

The main goal, however, is to raise support for the needy in their country, and to raise orphans into leaders.

"This is a program that is designed to help them, and in turn, their country," said Trinity United Methodist Church Music Director Marie Paquette.

"They can grow up into these leaders that God wants them to be so that they can be able to steward our nation. Eventually, rebuild our continent as well in the future," Kizito said.

If you'd like to support the choir, there are many ways you can do so.

You can purchase their merchandise, sponsor a child or make a donation.
