Wintergreen Finally Gets a Taste of Winter

Posted:

Nelson County, VA - Unseasonably high temperatures continued to plague Wintergreen for the month of December.

The ski resort in Nelson County pushed back the original start date by several weeks because it was too warm to make snow.

But the general manager says since opening Christmas Eve, things are finally looking up.

Daniel King knows life can sometimes knock you off your feet.

Last year the seven year-old's family couldn't make it to their annual ski vacation.

"The only reason we didn't go skiing is we had two broken legs and a car crash," King said, standing next to his father.

But the King's are back on the slopes and since switching ownership, Wintergreen says it's back in the business of making a profit.

Fifteen of 17 slopes are now open and the new water tower, that can double Wintergreen's snow making capability, is being put to the test. It's part of the $6 million in upgrades since Jim Justice took over as owner in May.

"The challenge we have in Virginia is when you can make show, you have to make a lot of it," explained Wintergreen's General Manager, Hank Thiess.

Thiess knows they're also at the mercy of mother nature, though. He says business at the ski resort was down by 50% for the month of December because of unseasonably high temperatures.

So far, however, January is looking more promising and there are still several months of the ski season left.

Expect to pay a little bit more if you're planning on hitting Wintergreen's slopes this year.

The price for an adult weekend pass went from $70 to $72 for the 2013 season.

The general manager says that's comparable to other resorts in our area, but they also offer several specials online like student discounts.
