Roanoke's Center in the Square Nears Re-Opening

Roanoke, VA - Roanoke's Center in the Square is in the home stretch of a $27 million dollar renovation that's transforming the downtown attraction into a real regional draw.

On Monday, there was actually so much going on that officials didn't want the media in the way or in danger as construction was still ongoing.

Even so, The History Museum of Western Virginia started moving its offices and archives into its new space on the Square's third floor. They are the first of several groups that need to make the move over the next few months.

The museum had been operating out of a storefront just down the street in downtown Roanoke.

They were expected to begin their move at the end of January, but the space they currently occupy will soon be used by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, so they had to move early.

"It's been a lot of work. We've had to pack up a lot in a hurry and everyone knows the joy of packing but it's been going pretty well and it should be really good once it's all done," said Visitors Services Coordinator Sam Berton.

On Tuesday, crews will start moving the offices of the Historical Society of Western Virginia into the first floor of the new space. Others will follow in the coming months.

The grand re-opening of Center in the Square is scheduled for May 18, which is right on schedule.
