Lynchburg Arts Gives Economy a Boost

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - A $35,000 investment into downtown Lynchburg's arts community is reaping big benefits for our entire economy: $613,000, according to the director of the James River Council for the Arts and Humanities.

The investment money comes from a new grant program funded by the city's amusement tax. The tax helps fund art programs and events in downtown Lynchburg.

Members of the arts community say the events help support the arts and have a ripple effect on the economy as a whole.

"The economic impact was phenomenal, definitely much more than anyone could ever dream. When you're getting 17 to 1 on the dollar, I'd love to have that myself at home," said Krista Boothby, executive director, James River Council for the Arts & Humanities.

City Council created the James River Arts District in 2010. James River Council for the Arts & Humanities, along with the city's Economic Development Office, run the program.
