Lynchburg Fire Dept. Receives Nearly $1 Million Grant

Lynchburg, VA - The Lynchburg fire chief says a nearly $1 million grant from FEMA will pay the salaries of nine new firefighters for the next two years.

Lynchburg's fire chief says the greatest impact will be improving what's called the "relief factor"-- having enough people to fill in when employees call out sick, are in training or on vacation.

"This helps us have additional people to staff our equipment on a daily basis and answer the calls. So, it's important," Chief Brad Ferguson explained.

The grant stipulates that no firefighters can be laid-off during the two year period. However, the department would not be obligated to keep any of the new employees once the grant expires.
