Wet Snow Slows Down Traffic on I-81 in Roanoke

Roanoke, VA - The snow really started coming down about 2:30 p.m. in Roanoke and it didn't take long for road conditions to start getting bad.

With the ground not yet frozen, the initial blast of snow quickly turned to slush on the roads, which had traffic on the interstate slowing down almost right from the beginning.

That slush made it difficult to change lanes.

VDOT officials say the plan is to keep the plows on the interstates and primary roads as long as the snow is falling and then move to secondary roads once it does stop.

And while VDOT says they are ready, they weren't able to pre-treat driving surfaces due to the rain leading into this event.

"The pre-treatment helps prevent the snow and ice from bonding to the pavement. So not being able to do that pre treatment may cause some problems," said Jamie Smith.

A quick check of Virginia 511 shows that there are a number of rural road closings around the area but things are still moving along on the primaries and Interstate.
