Danville, VA - Averett University kicked off Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a memorial breakfast Monday.
More than 60 people attended including city council members and Danville mayor Sherman Saunders.
This is Averett's fourth year hosting the community wide event honoring the civil rights leader.
Averett president Dr. Tiffany Franks says the event is all about maintaining Dr. King's legacy.
"We want to take advantage each year of the opportunity to make certain that people remember Dr. King, that they remember his message," Franks said.
Averett officials hope to expand the event next year.
Their goal is to see hundreds of attendees.
