Campbell County Dr. King Observance Draws Hundreds

Campbell Co., VA - The Campbell County NAACP celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's birthday Monday at their annual observance at Rustburg High School. The title of this year's event was "Stand Up for Justice, The Struggle is Not Over." Hundreds in the community came out to honor the late Dr. King.

Music rang out from every side of Rustburg High School's auditorium. Songs of praise and thanks to the man who died fighting for equality for all.

"When we started we had about 25 members in the choir and about 50 people in the audience. Now we have grown to in excess of several hundred people in the audience and the choir is near 100 members now," said Reginald Herndon, President Campbell County NAACP.

Herndon says the program has been running for almost two decades.

"19 years and going strong," said Herndon.

People we spoke with say they would not miss this event for the world.

"I'm always going to be here, as long as God allows me to be here," said Sandra Pugh.

Pugh's been coming since day one.

"It's just a privilege to be able to say, 'I'm a part of history,'" said Pugh.

The program featured several local children, all of whom recited original essays they wrote.

"I couldn't get any prouder," said Fred Watson of his daughter's performance in the program.

The keynote speaker was Audrey Hines, who serves as the President of her own company in Georgia. Those in attendance were pleased with the program and hope people take away few key points.

"The importance of this day. That Dr. King was about service not about a day off to do nothing but it's about doing something," said Herndon.

"Unity. People as a whole get together and just love and come together as one," said Greg Waller.

Organizers from the event say there were fewer people in attendance this year, because many people traveled to D.C. to attend the Presidential inauguration. The final total is estimated to be around 350 attendees.
