Campbell County Uses Music to Soothe Animals' Souls

Campbell Co., VA - Music is soothing the pooches at Campbell County's Animal Control,  turning noisy dog kennels into peaceful sleeping rooms.

According to research, music puts the brain to work in ways other mental functions cannot. It actually exercises the brain. Campbell County Animal Control is now using it to get their dogs to stop barking.

"Fairytales and children's poetry mixed it with it," said Barbe Shackelford, Animal Control Volunteer and Director, Friends of Campbell County Animal Control.

One by one, they curled into bed, the dogs all nestled, tuck themselves into bed. With the click of a button, the music played and the animals seemed to sleep quietly.

The music comes from a simple MP3 player.

"They like the classical but they also like country too," said Shackelford.

Shackelford says the music is a win for everyone because it keeps the dogs on schedule.

"They all know if the music goes off at 4 o'clock, it's time to go to sleep," said Shackelford.

The added music also works wonders on staff.

"Even if it doesn't calm down the dogs some days, it calms me down, and that's good too," said Shackelford.

The cats seem to respond well to the music as well.

"The cats like country," said Shackelford.

The shelter applied for the equipment through the MP3 Music Shelter Project. Officials at Animal Control say you can do this at home too; just turn on some music. Just make sure it is music, though, and not many lyrics.
