Lynchburg, VA - A literary icon who has received dozens of awards and more than 30 honorary doctoral degrees is speaking in Lynchburg tonight. "An Evening with Maya Angelou" will take place at Randolph College at 7:00 p.m.

It is free to the public and seating is first come, first served. Angelou will give a 45 minute lecture on her life, her work and her view of the world.

"She's such a fabulous person who's lived such an incredible life and has been such a prominent person in our history, I think anybody who comes is going to learn something," said Brenda Edson, Randolph College Director of Communications.

Angelou's career spans more than 50 years. The 84-year-old has written six autobiographies, five books of essays, and several books of poetry, not to mention numerous plays. Now she is coming to the Hill City.

"It's a really rare opportunity," said student Sarah Maki.

"This is huge. To have someone like Maya Angelou come to Randolph College...we're all very excited, we're very honored we're proud," said Edson.

Edson says it has been a long process to get Angelou there.

"We've been working over the past couple of years to bring a variety of nationally known speakers to campus," said Edson.

Students like Maki are counting down the hours.

"We're allowed to start, I guess lining up as students a little early and I have friends who are planning on being there as early as they possibly can," said Maki.

Sophomore Erin Vasta will be on the stage giving Angelou's introduction.

"I'm going to just hope that I actually can speak," said Vasta. "I'm thrilled. I've looked up to her my whole life so I'm very excited to get the opportunity to tell other people about her."

Seating is open to the public and school officials say they are expecting a full house.

"We have a large theater that seats about 800. We also have room for about 200 in overflow," said Edson.

Doors opened at 6:00 p.m., Maya Angelou is set to speak at 7:00 p.m.

Officials say there will not be a meet and greet or opportunities for pictures.
