Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Died

The Cherokee Nation secretary of state died earlier today, Jan. 30.

According to a news release, 63-year-old Charles Head died in a car accident today.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker stated in the release that Head was an invaluable part of the Cherokee administration.

"Charles was a Cherokee statesman and ambassador for all of Indian Country," said Baker. "He was devoted to serving and working for the betterment of Native people..."

Head was a Pryor native and had worked as secretary of state since January 2012.

Head previously worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and was a Navy Vietnam War veteran.

"It's a great loss, institutional knowledge that will be hard to replace. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family," said Speaker of the Tribal Council Tina Glory-Jordan. "He was a good Cherokee man who had a heart for the people."
