Guns and Art: How One Local Artist is Promoting Safe Gun Use

Posted: Updated:

Artwork and gun training are not words you would normally connect to each other. But at Lot No. 6 in the Pearl District, those two things are coming together. Each month owner Vanessa Somerville opens her walls to a local artist to display their work.

"This is the first time an artist has gone above and beyond on her own to promote a cause," says Somerville.

The ink and watercolor artwork is the product of a years long journey and the artist behind it all has two other things she is passionate about. One hits closer to home.

"I am a survivor of domestic abuse and I thought this would be an opportunity to give back to a place that I should have went," says artist, Nichole Perkins.

Perkins will be donating part of her proceeds to DVIS. On the back of every piece she has also places a free admissions to a conceal and carry class. She says with everything that is going on in the world, she thought now would be a good time to team up with this training.

"A lot of people think with a conceal carry permit that you are qualified to stand up for yourself, your family, and your personal belongings, which you aren't all the way trained. If you are trained and take another class to handle your pistol or AR or any other weapon you are better off at protecting yourself," says Perkins.

Perkins says the class will teach the basics of using a gun and all the laws that go into owning and operating a gun. She says if you like the artwork and don't want the free class, you can give it to anyone you know that would like it. She just wants more people that want to learn how to operate a gun safely to take the class.

Perkins' artwork will be on display for the entire month of February. Lot No. 6 is open seven days a week.
