UPDATE: 1:06 a.m.

Lynchburg, VA - While many places in the ABC 13 Viewing Area had a rain/sleet/snow mix Thursday Night, the Roanoke Valley and the New River Valley saw a complete changeover to heavy, wet snow.

As of early Friday Morning, many areas in Roanoke County, Roanoke City, Salem, and Vinton had between 2-3" on the ground. Isolated amounts to 4" are possible in the Roanoke Valley.

The precipitation is starting to fade on radar now and should be coming to an end Friday Morning.

Still, many roads in the Roanoke, Botetourt, and Montgomery County areas are reported to be very slick. Be extra careful if you must travel into Early Friday.

The heavy snow in Roanoke was the exception and not the rule Thursday Night. Other areas just had a rain/sleet mix, with minor accumulations of slush at best.

Behind this system, very gusty winds are possible on it's back side Friday Night into Saturday.

UPDATE: 10:24 p.m.

Lynchburg, VA - Sleet and snow are both falling across the ABC 13 viewing area. In Roanoke County, Bent Mountain has 1" of snow on the ground, according to a report from VDOT. Snow has already coated the ground in parts of Roanoke City. Other areas have a rain/sleet/snow mix.

The National Weather Service has expanded a Winter Weather Advisory to include the New River Valley, the Roanoke Valley including Bedford, Franklin, Amherst, and Patrick Counties through Friday Morning for slick roadways.

The storm is coming from the gulf of Mexico and moving up the coast. The track is favorable for snowfall, but the system will not be pulling much cold air into it until it passes our area.

There has been enough cold air around to change rain over to a wintry mix in many areas tonight.

Between 1-3" of snow is possible on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and into the Roanoke Valley. Generally, a slushy 1" is possible even in Lynchburg.

Martinsville, Danville, and South Boston will likely see rain only.

We will be watching this system closely overnight, as only a slight cooling could produce more snow overnight.

Stay with ABC 13 and the ABC 13 Weather Experts for the very latest on the forecast.
