Running On Fumes - Hokies Lose to GT

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP/WSET) -- Kammeon Holsey scored all 13 points of his points in the first half to lift Georgia Tech to a 64-54 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Erick Green, who led the nation in scoring at 25.2 points per game coming in, paced Virginia Tech with 28 points.

Coach James Johnson said, "[Erick] was out of gas and fumes (at the end of the game). He had nothing."

Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory praised Green's overall play and said he'd vote for him for ACC Player of the Year. "It sounds like I love the guy," Gregory said.

The rest of the team shot 23 percent from the floor. Jarell Eddie did not score a single point and has made just one basket in the last two games - both losses to Maryland and Georgia Tech.

Marcus Georges-Hunt added 13 for the Yellow Jackets (13-9, 3-7 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won a road game for the first time this season and won in Blacksburg for the first time.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets opened a 22-point lead against the cold-shooting Hokies, who missed 12 of their first 13 shots and 20 of their first 23. Georgia Tech led 37-18 at halftime.

Virginia Tech (11-12, 2-8), which lost for the sixth straight time and the 10th time in the last 12 games, cut the lead to 60-52 on a runner by Green with 31.6 seconds left, but the Hokies got no closer.

Following the game Johnson shouted at his team in the locker room. Robert Brown (4 of 16 shooting) said Johnson was that vocal following the loss to Colorado State in the Las Vegas tournament earlier this season.
