New Details Emerge About Farmville Ex-Police Officer Following Standoff

Posted:

Charlotte, Co., VA - T.J. Long, a former Farmville Police Officer, is charged with 4 counts of Attempted Capital Murder, after police say he shot at them in Prince Edward County Saturday.

WSET looked into Long's history and found past reports that show Long, as a Police officer, had a heart for children in need.

Court records tell another story, however,  that life at home may have been troubled for Long.

As a police officer, Long seemed to be involved in the community. A 2010 press release shows he participated in operation Blue Christmas, a program that provides toys for children.
It even adds that Long came up with the first annual event.

Just one year later court records show a different side of Long, though.

On October 2, 2011 Long was charged with Assault and Battery for allegedly abusing his wife.
The next month, he was charged with DWI.

Then just 2 years later police met Long again in the standoff.

Captain Howard Hobgood with the Charlotte County Sheriff's office responded to the call Saturday Evening.

"There were more shots. It could have been as many as 10 or 12, yeah it was quite scary," said Hobgood.

Hobgood says at the end of Old Mill Road where Long allegedly fired several shots at police officers and it wasn't until they brought out a chopper that Long surrendered.

Police believe Long may also be connected with a house fire that started just minutes before the standoff that has been ruled an arson.

"We know each other, he was a former colleague from another department, I've known him for years," said Hobgood.

Hobgood chose not to comment on Long personally.

Long was never convicted of the assault and battery charge and is currently being held at Piedmont Regional Jail.

Police say the fire and standoff were stemmed from a domestic incident.
