Amherst County High Schoolers Building Brighter Future

Amherst, VA - Amherst County high schoolers are getting a big lesson on giving.

Four classes in the Building Trades program are building a home from the ground up for the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter.

Behind the baseball fields of Amherst County high school, the class project is beginning to take shape.

The 1,000 sq. ft. home will have three bedrooms, one bath, a dining room, living room and kitchen.

Behind the saws and hammers are students with plans to pursue careers in either engineering or construction.

Roy Prior is their teacher and director of the project. He says students are doing everything - carpentry work, the plumbing and the electrical.

This is the first Habitat for Humanity home that will be built by Amherst County high school students.

Craig Cassell, the executive director, says it'll go to one local family that could really use the help.

"She's a single mom with two children, very humble," Cassell explained.

Lynchburg Crane has offered to move the house free of charge to its future site off Galt's Mill Road.

And so the students are working hard to have it finished by the end of this semester.

"Every time they drive past this house for the rest of their lives, they'll be able to say there's something I did. There's an accomplishment that I helped. They're part of something bigger," said Roy Prior.
