The LCA wrestling team unseated 11-time defending state champ St. Christopher's by a half-point to win their first Independent Schools state title this past Saturday in Richmond.
In bizarre circumstances, especially at the state level, the scoring system was incorrectly calculating point totals for third and fourth place matches. This caused a delay in releasing the official point standings. Prior to the correction, LCA was leading by two points. It decreased to a half of a point once the final tabulations were counted.
In coach Paul Anthony's fifth season with the Bulldogs, he saw three seniors become first-time state champions.
Andrew Atkinson, Ike Podell and Blake Papet - who had all previously finished second at least once - all captured individual state titles with four other Bulldogs finishing second or third.
The top four finishers in each weight class can now move on to the Prep Nationals held at Lehigh in Pennsylvania beginning Friday. That is why the team was back on the mats practicing on Monday - just two days after winning the team title.
