General Carroll Thackston Laid to Rest in South Boston

South Boston, VA - The flags in South Boston flew at half-staff Thursday. The town is mourning the loss of one of its most decorated leaders.

"Everybody in the world should have the opportunity to meet a person like General Thackston at least once in their lives, " said South Boston Town Manager Ted Daniel.

A VMI graduate, General Thackston enjoyed more than 40 plus years of military service. He rose to the rank of Major General and was ultimately appointed to Adjutant General by then-Governor George Allen.

"General Thackston is just one that everyone looked upon as someone who is loyal, consistently one of integrity, and indeed a true Virginia patriot is now in heaven, " Allen said.

The funeral was well-attended by servicemen and women from the National Guard and high ranking government officials.

But South Boston residents who knew him as their Mayor, say the loss is equally devastating for them.

"General Thackston and I worked very closely together. I learned a lot from him. He was a great leader and he's going to be sorely missed, I can tell you, " said Acting Mayor Edward Owens.

Now, as they say their final goodbyes, town leaders hope to maintain his legacy of leadership, while remembering him as a friend.

"We're going to miss his leadership, but we're going to miss his friendship, and he was a father figure to us, so we suffer along with his family, " Daniel said.

The General was buried with Military Rites at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Frances Anne and three sons.
