Danville Residents Hope to Commemorate I.W. Taylor Elementary

Danville, VA - A lot of people were disappointed to hear the news that I.W. Taylor Elementary School in Danville will be closing because of budget cuts.

Taylor was a school for African-American children during segregation.

Now, one former student wants to pay homage to the education she received.

Carolyn LaViscount says the memories of her time at I.W. Taylor are very fond ones.

Though the school was segregated, she says the faculty saw education as a labor of love and provided nurturing to each and every student in ways that many schools lack today.

Now she wants it to be remembered with a historic highway marker.

Viscount has been in touch with the Mayor and other former students about the project.

She hopes the marker will be a reminder of just what the school meant to the African-American community even after I.W. Taylor closes at the end of this year.

"I plan to, along with a couple of others, go to the school board and see if we can get their support and perhaps help from the historical society, " said LaViscount.

LaViscount says many of the educators that worked at I.W. Taylor years ago are still living in Danville, and she hopes to be able to honor their service.
