FFA Benefits from Dodge Commercial

Posted:

Appomattox, VA - It's an industry that puts the shirt on our back and food on our tables. Tuesday, the Appomattox Senior FFA Chapter gathered to celebrate American agriculture at a time when the FFA is getting some national recognition too.

You may have seen the Dodge Ram commercial that ran during the Super Bowl. It declared 2013 as "The Year of the Farmer," even featured the FFA. FFA leaders are encouraging more young adults to choose a career in agriculture.  And for a few minutes during this year's big game, farmers took the spotlight.

"I had to watch it twice before I could believe it. To see that FFA emblem up across the country and the world," said Ed McCann.

Ed McCann is an FFA advisor at Appomattox County High School. He also teaches agriculture.

"We estimate by 2050 we're going to have to feed twice as many people and clothe twice as many people with less land and with less people in the industry," said McCann.

McCann says agriculture is a growing career field with more than 300 different jobs related to agriculture, including marketing, agri-business, and agri-science.

Appomattox gives students hands-on experience in many ag-areas, including livestock and mechanics. Student Cory Hodges wants to become a machinist.

"I just like hands on, building stuff," said Cory Hodges, VP, Appomattox Sr., FFA Chapter.

"It makes your mind think a little bit more to make sure you're putting parts back together right," said Caleb Baker, president, Appomattox Sr. FFA Chapter.

Appomattox currently has around 50 FFA members. McCann hopes that by raising agricultural awareness that number will grow.

"We need young adults to start getting ready now so they will be able to serve our country and world in the future," said McCann.
