NRV, Higher Elevations See Wintry Mix

Christiansburg, VA - While much of southwestern Virginia got drenched Tuesday, areas in the upper elevations, including the New River Valley, dealt with some ice issues.

In many districts schools were closed as ice began forming in the early morning hours.

But for the most part, the roads stayed clear with a few minor wrecks being reported as well as a larger wreck happening on I-77 in Carroll County.

For VDOT the winter season has actually been quite busy as they have staged for fifteen different winter events so far.

"It's definitely been a hectic winter as for the number of events we've had and the difficulty of the forecast and mobilizing to prepare to be ready for whatever comes our way," said VDOT's Jason Bond.

The biggest issue coming out of this near miss is power outages in the southern New River Valley.

Currently some 3,500 Appalachian Power Company customers are without power in Floyd, Carroll and Patrick Counties.
