'Donuts With Dad' Encourages Parental Involvement

Lynchburg, VA - There are over 70 million fathers across the nation according to the latest census numbers, and fatherhood.gov will tell you, when they are involved it can make a huge difference in their child's life, especially when it comes to the classroom.

Linkhorne Elementary School in Lynchburg is taking that to heart and encouraging fathers to get involved at school with events like Wednesday's Donuts with Dad.

Fred Morris doesn't miss it.

"When they get up in the morning they say, are you coming and I say, ‘Yeah, I'm coming,'" Morris said, "I come out every time it happens and I enjoy myself. (It) Makes the kids happy."

Bradford Via joined his two children in the cafeteria too.

"They're happier when we can show ourselves here and support them, and when they come home they are a little more excited about doing their homework with us," Via said.

According to fatherhood.gov, when dads are involved in the lives of their children, especially their education, their children learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behavior.

Linkhorne reading specialist Karen Kohuth helps organize the breakfast with dad.

"It starts the children's day off knowing their parents are involved," Kohuth said.

The annual event grows every year at Linkhorne Elementary School.

"It gets to be where the cafeteria is packed.  It's overwhelming and exciting to see such great support from our families," Kohuth said.

It's a morning these dads said is well worth their time.

"Once you come here it makes them better," Morris said. "That's what I think."
