Lynchburg, VA – The man convicted of killing a Lynchburg couple in 2002 will spend the rest of his life behind bars, and will not be put to death.
Leon Winston was convicted of killing the couple in front of their young daughters.
Earlier this week, the U-S Supreme Court rejected Virginia's request to reinstate the death sentence of Winston.
Thursday morning, the Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney held a press conference and said they will not pursue the death penalty again. Now Winston will spend the rest of his life in prison.
A lower court had concluded that Winston's lawyers did not try hard enough to show he was mentally disabled, making him ineligible to be put to death.
