Lynchburg Police Searching for Rapist

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg police are looking for a man who reportedly walked through a woman's front door, beat her up and raped her.

It happened just before 9 p.m. Monday on Liggates Road, off Fort Avenue.

Police have no reason to believe the victim knew her attacker. They say she left her front door unlocked and he simply walked right in.

It has police are putting extra patrols in the neighborhood and extra resources into this case.

"The whole situation last night is sad," Amanda Keifer said, clutching her front door.

She's keeping all her doors locked and porch lights on.

Since her husband saw a suspicious man walking down the street, she's has a hard time feeling safe in her own neighborhood.

"He hopped behind the apartments right there. And he just randomly said something mumbling, 'I'm going to see my baby's mama,'" Keifer recalled.

Police say a black man, wearing a yellow or gold hoodie sweat shirt, walked into an unlocked home on the 1300 block of Liggates Road, beat up and raped a middle aged woman and ran out the back door towards St. Cloud Avenue.

Police say robbery doesn't appear to be the motive because he didn't take iPads or electronics, which were clearly in plain view.

"We've put a lot of resources towards this investigation. Obviously, this is something we take very seriously based on the nature of what took place. And we have detectives following up on several leads as well as physical evidence collected at the scene," said Captain Ryan Zuidema with the Lynchburg Police Department.

Police are chasing down leads, waiting to see if they get a hit on the DNA database and warning students at nearby Fort Hill Community school to stay vigilant.

Parents like Amanda Keifer say they're considering arming themselves, in case he strikes again.

The suspect's described as a black male in early 20s, with a medium build and broad shoulders, weighs between 160-180 pounds, clean shaven, and wearing a yellow or gold sweat shirt with a hood.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
