RICHMOND - John I Burton coach Aaron Williams said Mike Cartolaro's Altavista program is the Division 1 boys program to emulate in the state of Virginia.
The Colonels justified that statement with a resounding 47-26 win over John I. Burton in the Division 1 state semifinals Thursday afternoon at VCU.
Altavista (23-3) led 24-11 at halftime and went up by 23 at one point in the 4th quarter. The Colonels start four sophomores and a junior and the youngsters have delivered. Juan Thornhill had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Twins brother Demetrius and Darius Johnson combined for 20 points and 9 rebounds and Meche Maulbeck, who's been on a scoring streak of late, dropped in 10 points.
Altavista will face West Point after the Pointers defeated Parry McCluer 62-53 in the other semifinal. Cartolaro played for Parry McCluer in the 1970s when current long-time Fighting Blues head coach Nelson Fox was an assistant. Since Cartolaro has coached at Altavista, the Colonels have never faced Parry McCluer in a regular season or postseason game. They have scrimmaged though.
