Poor Performance Still Gets Radford a Semifinal Win

RICHMOND - The Radford boys basketball team will play for another state championship. They defeated Essex Thursday night in the VHSL Division 2 state semifinals 54-40.

The Bobcats won state titles in 2011 and 2009. This is the program's 15th appearance in the state final four. In addition to those two titles, Radford also won it all in 1949.

Radford (27-2) will face the winner of the William Monroe-Gate City game that tipped off Thursday at 9 p.m.

Despite the win, after the game Radford head coach Rick Cormany said, "It's real hard to be positive other than the fact that we're still playing. It was one of the worst performances we've had all year. I'm not sure our guys stepped up to the challenge and showed any toughness. I told the guys I'm used to coaching guys that want to play on this stage. We have to play a lot better or we'll be taking home a runner up trophy."

Senior Josh Little said, "We have to make sure during practice we're going all out to get this out of our head. The only thing we can do is work harder than ever."

"I was just flabbergasted by our performance in all phases of the game," Cormany added. He specified their free throw percentage. They made 15 of their 31 attempts.

Four Bobcats scored an overwhelming majority of the team's points. Marcus Finley (16), Nate Jones (10), Josh Little (10), and Isaiah Phillips (12) were all in double figures in points.

Radford had the most amount of students in attendance of any school that played Thursday.
