Altavista, VA - If your television's been tuned to Channel 13 Friday, you probably caught some of it: Two Altavista basketball teams competing in Richmond at the championships.

The town's really backing its teams. Many wish they can be in Richmond for the game. Altavista Combined School is very proud to have not one but two teams - the boys and the girls - in the Division One Group A State Championship.

The pride is hung in the hall for everyone to see. Article after article tracking the Colonels through an astounding season litters a school billboard. The assistant principal in the Middle School, Missy Beckford, is just tickled her boys and girls made it all the way to Richmond.

"You wish you were there?" we asked. "Yes, absolutely," said Beckford.

At Altavista Combined School, Colonel spirit is sprinkled around every corner. Some have left Altavista to cheer on their team. And, believe it or not, the school is cool with that.

"I think it's important that our kids know that their family is there behind them," said Beckford.

The teams getting this far is exciting, but Altavista has been here before. The High School assistant principal, Jason Kilbourne, proudly shows us an old headline from the last time the boys and girls went to states, even won the whole thing.

"We got to experience that in 2004, which is totally awesome. To be able to do that again this year is great as well," said Kilbourne.

"Our people going everywhere. They truly follow their teams," said Beckford.

In fact, the entire town's jumping on board. Down the street at Main Street Cafe and Coffee, the basketball team gets its own sandwich - chicken, cheese, and just like the teams it is honor of, it's also got a little kick of salsa on the side.

"It's got a little bit of spice to it, kinda like the basketball team," said Stephen Mattox, employee, Main Street Cafe and Coffee.

This really is a big deal for Altavista. After school, students and staff met in the auditorium to watch the game together on the jumbo screen.
