Danville, VA - Danville Police are investigating what they say is an apparent homicide. They say someone shot Joey Williams, 43, multiple times in his own home.
Police got the call Friday morning to the Nor Villa apartment complex, but they say his wounds had clearly happened hours before.
"He was laying face down on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds," said Lt. Scott Eanes, Danville Police Department.
Police found Williams shot in the front, back and head. They say when they got to the scene around 9:30 a.m., the blood had dried, indicating the wounds had occurred overnight.
"There was no forced entry into the apartment or anything so we don't know if he knew his assailant or not," said Eanes.
Williams' wife of six years, Melinda Mumford, is in shock. She says she stayed with her sister in Greensboro last night and before she could even come home, she got a call to go to the Police station instead.
"I can't believe it, I can't believe he is gone," said Mumford.
Mumford says she's always felt safe in that neighborhood.
"Everybody knew everybody over there, everybody looked out for everybody. It was a nice neighborhood," said Mumford.
But police says some of their neighbors heard gunshots overnight and no one called 9-1-1.
With Mumford's home now a crime scene, she plans to stay at her sister's house for a while.
"I'm going to take her home with me," said Regina Mumford, Melinda's sister.
At this time, Police say they do not have a suspect, but they do have a lot of evidence, including gun cartridges. They do not believe his wife was involved. Meanwhile, Williams' body is in Roanoke for an autopsy.
