On March 18, 2013, Linus Bike releases a statement following announcements that the San Diego City Council voted to create safer commuter routes for bicyclists.
According to the Fox 5 San Diego article, the resolution was written by Lorie Zapf, a city councilwoman, who made suggestions for new bike lanes, including a “green line that’s built in the middle of the road as a commuter bike path, designed with brightly colored road markings.”
The article states that the resolution “called for road improvements, encouraged cycling commuter projects and for an expansion of a 2002 Bicycle Master Plan.” And while the article mentions that there are still some concerns for pedestrians choosing to ride a commuter bike, such as navigating passed on and off-ramps, San Diego's implementation of new bicycle lanes is considered a step in the right direction by many cyclists.
Lorie Zapf was quoted in the article as saying, “San Diego was not built out in its initial plan with bike lanes in mind, so now we have to fit them in, and that is no easy task.”
China Reevers, Linus Bike representative, understands how important bicycle lanes can be in a city like San Diego. “Creating bicycle lanes for cyclists, and making those lanes visible to people driving in cars, helps keep everyone safe. It’s not easy implementing bike routes in a big city like San Diego, where cycling was never planned for. Still, precedents set by other cities shows us that the effort will pay off. This is a great start and hopefully other big cities will follow the same path.”
Linus Bike is a California-based bicycle manufacturer that specializes in creating vintage style city bikes and commuter bikes.
