Posted:

16 seed Liberty (15-20) vs. 16 seed North Carolina A&T (18-16)

Tip off at 6:40 p.m. on TruTV. The winner advances to the Round of 64 to face the NCAA Tournament's number one overall seed Louisville in Lexington, KY Thursday at 6:50 p.m.

GAME NOTES

-LU junior guard John Caleb Sanders is 8 points away from 1,000 for his college career.

-It's LU third trip to the NCAA Tournament. They've always been a 16 seed. They lost to North Carolina (1994) and St. Joe's (2004) in previous games.

-Liberty actually led the Tar Heels 46-45 with 10:01 remaining in that 1994 game that featured a UNC starting lineup that included Rasheed Wallace, Brian Reese, Eric Montross, Derrick Phelps, and Donald Williams. That UNC team outscored the Flames 26-5 the rest of the way and won 71-51 but the Tar Heels were upset by Boston College in the second round.

-The 2004 St. Joe's team featured Jameer Nelson and Delonte West. Nelson has played well in the NBA with the Orlando Magic. West has been on a number of NBA rosters. That St. Joe's team lost in the Elite 8 to Oklahoma State.

-Ryan Mantlo was a starter on LU's 2004 team. He went on to coach current LU guard Tavares Speaks while he played at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC before transferring to LU.

-LU's top three scorers average 13-plus points a game. John Caleb Sanders (14.2), Davon Marshall (13.4), and Tavares Speaks (13.1) scored at a rapid pace in the 4-game run through the Big South Conference Tournament. If they can continue that streak, LU increases their chances to beat A&T.

-LU, on average, scores 69.1 points a game and gives up 69.9. A&T averages 62.4 a game and allows 61.4.
