Martinsville Job Fair Attracts Hundreds

Martinsville, VA - GSI Commerce held a job fair Tuesday to bring in new employees, and 100 people in Martinsville may soon have a regular paycheck.

Hundreds of people packed their building to submit an application. The last time they had a job fair was two years ago. They hope to hire in the next 2 to 4 months.

"It's highly important that I get a job because...there are bills to be paid. I've got bills to be paid and I've got to eat and I don't want to be on welfare," said Ella Leftwich, a Danville resident.

Although Leftwich hasn't been unemployed long, the bills are piling up and so is the stress.

"It's tough because I got, right now, I've got a light bill I am going to pay and I don't know how I am going to pay it," said Leftwich.

So, Leftwich joined the hundreds of other hopeful applicants to get full time work.

"Work is very scarce around here," said Anthony Luther, Fieldale resident.

GSI Commerce packs and ships orders for several clients, including Ebay. The company wants to add 100 employees to its growing Martinsville location.

"That means there's going to be a lot of opportunity here for people to get a job," said Luther.

"From the turnout, it's obviously very important for the area. And we as an employer in the area are very fortunate that there is a good workforce and a dedicated workforce in this area," said Kim Smith-Glisson, director of operations for Martinsville GSI.

They want to find employees of all skill levels for various openings.

"That will fill jobs as pickers, packers, equipment operators, leads, supervisors, etc.," said Smith-Glisson.

And the people in line have their fingers crossed.

"I'm hoping I will be one of the lucky ones," said Leftwich.

The job fair will be open again Wednesday. They say that the entrance level pay will be $8 an hour.
