Health Check: Milk Choice For Kids Doesn't Matter

Posted:

You hear all the time about how important milk is for children. But picking the right kind of milk may not be as important.

Experts have said that skim milk helps children avoid extra calories. But in a recent study from UVA, scientists found skim and low-fat milk may not be as useful for weight loss as previously thought.

They actually found a higher childhood obesity rate among kids who drank one percent milk rather than whole milk. But the researchers think that may be because parents of heavier children switch their children to a lower fat milk in an effort to cut calories.

Since 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that children drink slim or low-fat milk after age two.
