Danville Firefighter Recovering After Accident Last Month

Posted:

Danville, VA -- A Danville firefighter, recovering from a very bad fall, has a new perspective on life. You may remember, Barry Neal fell off a 10 foot scaffold.

"I was up on top of a scaffolding and I was making my way onto the top of the RV, oh a about another 3 feet and that's when I slipped," said Neal.

And that was the last thing Barry Neal remembers from his fall last month. But for his friends and family, everything from that moment on is all too clear.

"I felt like that God was just going to sustain us through it and he did," said Donna Neal, Barry's wife.

Barry suffered six broken ribs, a fracture behind his ear, and 5 broken bones in his back.  He had bleeding in his brain and a partially-collapsed lung.

"I'm just watching him as a walking miracle really," said Donna.

But this miracle didn't happen on its own. Barry has many thanks.

"I was just blessed. You just don't see this. It was emotional," said Barry.

The has thanks to his brother and son first responding to the call and to his family of firefighters gathering as the helicopter took off.

"It was the most humbling thing I have ever seen," said Barry.

In just a matter of weeks, he's received hundreds of cards and dozens of visits. Even strangers on Facebook posted their well wishes.

"I can never thank these people enough for the love they've shown me, my family," said Barry.

Now, as he recovers, he has one goal in mind.

"I'm working really hard and I'm going back to the fire department," said Barry.

There is a pancake benefit for Barry Friday night. It lasts from 5 to 8 at Kentuck Baptist Church Mission Center. When we asked Barry about it, he said he can't wait until he can do something for all the people who are helping him.
