From the VSGA:
SUFFOLK –– Rustburg's Clayton Forren, 17, shot an event-best final round even-par 72 to post a four-stroke victory as the Virginia State Golf Association Suffolk Junior Open concluded today at Riverfront Golf Club.
After opening with 76 on a breezy first day at Nansemond River Golf Club, Forren was one of two competitors tied for the top spot entering the final round and concluded the championship with a 4-over 148 aggregate. Northern Virginian Adam Szwed, 16, of Woodbridge placed second after carding 73 (8-over 152). Sixteen-year-olds Zeke Shen of Forest (75) and TJ Osborne of Virginia Beach (76) finished tied for third, respectively at 13-over 157.
In windy final round conditions, Forren relied on sound ball-striking and played the last 11 holes in one under par. The senior at Rustburg High School knocked in a 25-footer at the par-4 15th hole and converted an up and down from the greenside bunker two holes later to shoot one under on the inward nine. Consistent play keyed the Lynchburg-area golfer to the title.
"I kept it in front of me and hit a lot of greens. Nothing special," he said. "I hit the ball really well. You have to hit it straight and guess right on the distances in these conditions."
Forren was the medalist in stroke-play qualifying at last year's VSGA Junior Match Play and his stellar play continues. He's bound for Longwood University in the fall on a golf scholarship.
"Everything is getting better and I'm improving," Forren said. "I'm working hard and it's starting to pay off."
In the 14-15 age bracket, Parker See, 15, of Verona (Staunton area) posted a wire-to-wire victory in the division, following his first day 78 with 81 on day two (15-over 159). Fellow 15-year-old and local Charles "CJ" Lyon of Virginia Beach returned rounds of 79-83 to finish three strokes back (18-over 162). Logan Yates, 15, of Ruckersville carded 79 (21-over 165), the low round of the day in the division, and his total was a seven-stroke improvement over his first round total.
Central Virginian Drew Brockwell, 12, of Chesterfield closed with an age-division best 5-over 77 (14-over 158) to register a wire-to-wire four-stroke victory among the 12-13-year-olds (5,473 yards, par 36-36—72). Thirteen-year-olds L.J. Kruszewski of Chesapeake (79) and Minsuk Kang of Fairfax (84) finished four off the pace in the age bracket (18-over 162).
In the girls' 16-18 division (5,473 par 36-36—72), 17-year-old Lauren Kruszewski of Chesapeake turned in her second consecutive round of 4-over 76 to roll to her third consecutive title in the event. In the breezy conditions, Kruszewski played controlled shots to account for five birdies in the two days.
Khushboo Thiagaraj, 16, of Haymarket, was second with a 24-over 168 aggregate (85-83).
Chesapeake's Kelsey Kirkman, 15, carded a final round 88—12 shots better than the next best score in the 14-15 age division on the last day—to post a one-stroke comeback victory. She trailed first round leader and fellow Chesapeake resident Miranda Lassiter, 14, by 11 strokes entering the final day, but Kirkman's final day score was good enough to post a one-stroke win.
