The difference in salaries between men and women continues to make headlines across America.
Here in Oklahoma - on average - there's a $10,000 gap between the salaries of men and women.
Teri Aulph of Aulph Consulting stopped by KTUL Tuesday for Good Morning Oklahoma's You're Hired segment. She offered advice to women and employers on how to close the gender gap.
She referred to a book by Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook. It's called, "Lean In".
Aulph said the book is a call to arms for working women everywhere, urging them to aggressively pursue success and never back down.
Here are three tips the next time you head in to negotiate a salary or promotion:
· Stand firm in your strengths
· Avoid having a chip on your shoulder
· Understand that raising awareness of your results is a great way to open the 'salary increase' conversation
"While negotiating a new job starting salary, do your homework and ask for the market data reflects, regardless of gender," she said. "Never be a bulldozer, you are a more effective influencer when you maintain emotional control and speak with data and facts."
Employers can also help the issue, too, Aulph said.
"Do market studies on a regular basis to ensure you are paying to market. Audit your compensation structure and how it's applied to avoid unfair disparity due to gender. If you find a problem, fix it!"
